My trip to the Mall

I hadn't been to the mall in awhile, so going there was weird. I normally don't go to the mall anymore because since the economy has been declining, so has the stores that aren't making any money-probably because people don't have the money to spend. But never the less I went to one store that I never go into, American Eagle. It not that I don't like American Eagle, my perceived view of the places was that it represented a style that wasn't me. I always feel that the people there are pretentious because they are a name brand. But when I went in I actually like some of the clothes and the employees greeted me with all smiles. I still probably wouldn't buy their clothes because they are too much and when you where their items you basically a walking advertisement displaying the name of their brand across your chest. But all in all, my experience there was good. It didn't make me want to buy their clothes, but I can understand why people would. There was very good customer services and the place was very bright and attractive to look at.

Check This Out!!!!

Hey guys! So for my Advertising Class we got into groups and each one did a project to promote being responsible for binge drinking. Each project was a guerrilla marketing tactic to get students on campus to Step It Up and be responsible drinkers. If you wanna drink that's fine, but don't do in a stupid manner that's going to affect you and others.

Check what our group did!!!!

Please fill this survey out to help people understand the effects of binge drinkers!!!

Group Projects

On Wednesday I looked at a RAW display in the student center.  The display was in a glass case across from McDonalds.  It was interesting because it focused on statistics of alcohol and rape relations among women.  The display had half naked barbie dolls holding signs with statistics on them.  It was a neat display but I thought it wasn't that effective.  That area of the student center doesn't get that much traffic, plus it's a glass case indented into the wall.  If someone were to walk by they probably would be less likely to look at it.  I didn't think it was really "guerilla" advertising.

The second RAW event I went to was outside of Lawson on Friday.  It was a mock tailgate where students from class had beer drinking t-shirts, a cooler, music and a megaphone.  They yelled at students "Party" and acted like they were drunk and tailgating.  It was really effective because a lot of people stopped and listened to them.  They promoted RAW in a really effective way.  I thought that there project was a great one.

3 EXAMPLE QUESTIONS FOR THE EXAM!!

For our first exam three questions that could be presented are

First the most basic question that everyone should know when studying advertising is
1.)What is Integrated Marketing Communications?

The answer to that is that IMC is the coordination and integration of all marketing communication tools, avenues and sources within a company into a seamless program which maximizes the impact on consumer and other end-users at a minimal cost.

A second question could be,
2.)What are the four components of an IMC plan?

The answer is the Foundation, Advertising tools, Promotional tools and Integration tools.

The third question could ask,
3.) What are the 4 types of corporate names?

The answer is Overt names, Implied names, Conceptual names, and Iconoclastic names.

These are just a few examples of some questions that could be on the exam.  They have all been covered in class lectures and students, if they study, will know them.

Purchasing the product was a breeze- FEBREZE!

I looked around my room today and found a product that I find myself always buying - Febreze.  I think personally the product reminds me of home, every time I spray it I get a big whiff of mom's living room cleaning.  When I think about why my mom started first buying it, or why I still buy it (besides of the home smell to it), descriptive words come to my mind:
-Fresh
-Clean
-Smells good
-Refreshing
-Disinfectant
-Eliminates odor

The image it portrays is clean and simple.  The bottle reminds me of fresh water, very clean, as if you could drink it (you probably wouldn't want to do that though).

On Brandtags.net the top 10 descriptive words for the brand Febreze are
1.) Smell
2.)Fresh
3.) Scent
4.)Spray Stinky
5.)Useless
6.)Odor
7.)Air
8.)Clean
9.)Fabric
10.)Useless

The last 5 were repetitive words, the two that really suck out and were popular descriptive words were Smell and Fresh, two words that I also used to describe the product.

I think that Frebreze gives off the image of being a "fresh," "smell good," "clean" product though it's commercials.  The commercials also are sometimes funny and stress on the fact that Febreze smells very good.  The brand also markets itself through other alternative smelling products such as plug in applicators, candles, and it has also partnered with Tide laundry detergent to come up with an idea for better smelling clothes.

I'm a coca cola type of girl.  I also happen to think their commercials are pretty great.  Since technology is growing more and more these days t.v., movies, and commercials all seem to be intensified by visual effects.  I really like this computerized commercial by coca cola, it's pretty awesome!

Me

My name is Sarah Shelton.  This is my last semester in college and I'm scared to death.  My degree will be in Journalism and I've spent most of my time in school focusing on the writing aspect.  The few classes I took with graphics and advertising strategies I loved!  I love to write, but I found out as I went through the motions of college that I really love the visual, creative aspect about media and how it communicates to people.  I hope that by taking this class I will grasp a better understanding about how advertising and marketing works in society.
